A new park in the town of Apple Valley is set to open this Veterans Day to honor one of America’s most accomplished jet-fighter pilots. The park, named Captain Joseph McConnell Jr. U.S.A.F. Park, commemorates Joseph C. McConnell Jr.—the top U.S. jet ace of the Korean War who made his home in Apple Valley.
Construction of the park, located at 21878 Pah-Ute Ave, represents a significant civic effort. Funded in part by state support under Prop 68 and developed by the town, the park project aims to serve as both a tribute and a community gathering space.
When the ribbon is cut at 1 pm on November 11, the park will symbolically link McConnell’s legacy with the everyday life of local families, veterans, and residents. McConnell’s story of service, aviation skill, and hometown connection resonates in the High Desert region—making the park’s opening a meaningful local milestone.
The park is more than a memorial: it is designed for community use, celebrating both history and recreation. As Apple Valley grows and evolves, the new park stands as a physical space where remembrance and everyday life intersect.
This Veterans Day, visitors to Apple Valley will have a new reason to gather, reflect, and celebrate with a fresh community space dedicated to one of their own and the spirit of service he represents.
