50 Years of March of Dimes: One Man’s Journey Inspires a Community

May 6, 2026 | Spotlight Features

This weekend’s March of Dimes “March for Babies” Walkathon marks a major milestone in the High Desert. Beyond the 50-year legacy of the event, it’s the story of one local participant that continues to define its meaning.

For Apple Valley resident Tom Schibusch, the walk is more than a community gathering; it’s a lifelong mission. What began when he was just 13 years old has turned into decades of involvement, with Schibusch returning year after year to support families facing challenges similar to his own.

Turning Adversity Into Purpose

Schibusch’s story began under difficult circumstances. Born far earlier than expected and weighing just over a pound, he faced serious medical challenges from the start. As a child, he was later diagnosed with cerebral palsy, a condition that required years of treatment, including multiple surgeries, physical therapy, and the use of braces and full-body casts.

Despite those obstacles, he chose not to be defined by limitations. Instead, he became an advocate, using his own experience to support others and bring awareness to the importance of maternal and infant health.

A Commitment That Spans Generations

Over the years, Schibusch has walked countless miles in support of March of Dimes, becoming a familiar and respected figure within the event. The walk itself has changed over time, from long routes through Victorville decades ago to today’s more accessible path around Victor Valley College. However, Schibusch’s dedication has remained constant.

His involvement has also helped bring attention and participation from across the community and beyond, with the event growing into one of the High Desert’s most recognized annual traditions.

More Than a Walk

The March for Babies event continues to play a vital role in supporting programs that assist mothers and newborns. The event helps fund services that range from prenatal care to neonatal support and medical research. It also serves as a platform to highlight the ongoing challenges families face and the importance of early care and intervention.

For Schibusch, the impact goes beyond the numbers. His goal has always been to inspire others to get involved and understand the importance of giving back, especially younger generations.

A Milestone Worth Celebrating

The 50th annual walk will take place Saturday, May 9, from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Victor Valley College, where community members will once again come together for a cause that has united the region for decades.

As participants gather to celebrate this milestone, Schibusch will be there once again, continuing a journey that reflects resilience, purpose, and an unwavering commitment to making a difference.
