High Desert CTE Teachers Build Industry Skills Through Hands-On Externships

Jul 10, 2026 | Careers & Industry, Schools & Sports

This summer, Automotive Career Technical Education (CTE) teachers from across the High Desert strengthened their industry knowledge through hands-on externship experiences with two valued community partners—Mitsubishi Cement and Victorville Motors.

At Mitsubishi Cement, an Automotive CTE instructor from Adelanto High School participated in a two-week externship, working alongside industry professionals to learn about diesel mechanics, welding, and the operations of a modern manufacturing facility. The immersive experience provided valuable insight into manufacturing processes, equipment, and workforce expectations that will enhance classroom instruction and better prepare students for careers in the skilled trades.

In addition, Automotive teachers from Adelanto High School, Apple Valley High School, and Hesperia High School partnered with Victorville Motors for a professional learning experience focused on the dealership’s Service Department. During the externship, teachers explored current industry trends, evolving automotive technologies, and the day-to-day operations of a modern service department. The experience provided educators with a deeper understanding of the technical skills, industry standards, and career pathways available within today’s automotive industry.

These externships are an important part of Mountain Desert Career Pathways’ commitment to connecting education with industry. By providing teachers with meaningful workplace experiences, educators can bring current industry practices, real-world applications, and valuable career insights back to their classrooms, creating richer learning experiences for students.

Beyond expanding technical knowledge, both externships strengthened partnerships between local education and industry while opening the door to future work-based learning opportunities for students throughout the region.

Mountain Desert Career Pathways extends its sincere appreciation to Mitsubishi Cement and Victorville Motors for investing in its educators and helping build stronger career pathways for High Desert students. Together, these partnerships ensure that classroom learning remains aligned with the skills and experiences employers are seeking in tomorrow’s workforce.
