High Desert Youth Athletes Head to Nationals as California’s Only Team

Jun 10, 2026 | Schools & Sports

A team of four talented young athletes from the High Desert is preparing to represent not only Apple Valley, but all of California, at this summer’s Scholastic Action Shooting Program National Championship in Ohio.

The Apple Valley Gun Club squad—comprised of Ethan Gunn, Justin Morrison, Halia Mitchell, and Kaylee Condron—earned the distinction of being the state’s only team competing at the national event. Despite being one of the smallest teams in the competition, the group has built a reputation for producing impressive results against much larger programs from across the country.

Leading the team is 18-year-old Ethan Gunn, who enters the championship following a strong season that included a state title in California and a top-three finish in Arizona. The team’s younger competitors have also made their mark. Fourteen-year-old Halia Mitchell captured a California state championship this season, narrowly edging teammate Kaylee Condron, who finished as runner-up in her first year with the club. Fifteen-year-old Justin Morrison also earned a second-place finish at the state level, adding to the team’s growing list of accomplishments.

Behind the athletes is longtime coach Ryan Gunn, who has spent nearly a decade helping develop young shooters through the Apple Valley Gun Club. He believes the program provides valuable lessons that extend beyond competition, teaching responsibility, discipline, focus, and firearm safety.

The team’s achievements have made them a source of pride for the Apple Valley community, and their journey to nationals highlights the opportunities available to young athletes who commit themselves to mastering their craft and supporting one another along the way.
